Giocatori di livello più alto dell'istanza posso facilmente partecipare all'istanza senza l'ausilio di un gruppo (a meno che non ci sono particolari boss che richiedo obbligatoriamente più player).
Le istanza vengono spesso utilizzate come modo per raccogliere gli elementi di un gear (in gergo farm, farmare) e non tanto per acquisire esperienza, perché gli elite mob anche se forti non danno molti punti. Con l'introduzione del Dungeon Finder è stata però data anche la possibilità di vincere punti esperienza, monete e premi gear fino al raggiungimento dell'end-game: in seguito, tramite tale strumento si possono vincere punti Justice o Valor con i quali acquisire i componenti dei Tier.
Si possono incontrare problemi nell'entrare nell'istanza. Tutti i problemi sono generalmente segnalati con un messaggio sovrimpresso al monitor. Comunemente è possibile incorrere nei seguenti problemi
Prima dell'introduzione del Dungeon Finder alcune istanze erano difficili da raggiungere o ad esclusivo appannaggio di una delle due fazioni perché i portali erano ubicati direttamente all'interno del territorio o dell'Orda o dell'Alleanza come Ragefire Chasm e Stormwind Stockade che si trovano rispettivamente ad Orgrimmar e a Stormwind City.
Ciò rende difficile ai player dell'altra fazione entrarci e prendere lo step per l'achievement 
[Classic Dungeonmaster].
Se si ha il livello appropriato si può entrare usando il Dungeon Finder, ma i giocatori che hanno superato quel livello potranno solo recarvisi direttamente con il rischio di incorrere nelle problematiche derivanti dall'entrare in territorio della fazione opposta.
